Don’t Let Your Insomnia Run Your Life!

Even if you are very tired, resist the urge to sleep in on the weekends. If you let yourself rest for an extra hour or two, you could mess up your sleeping schedule for the week. Once you wake up, get out of bed. Do not allow yourself to fall back asleep or to stay in bed for a while.

Don’t think about your worries when it’s bedtime. Worry about things at a different time of the day. Many find themselves struggling to sleep because their mind is racing. Why not schedule the time to do this earlier so that it doesn’t disrupt your sleep. That will allow you to focus on sleeping instead.

Get rid of those caffeinated beverages, especially in the hours leading up to bed. Instead, drink water, herbal teas, and/or decaffeinated drinks. In addition, avoid foods and drinks that are high in sugar right before bed because sugar can cause an energy spike, which is not something you want at bedtime.

Avoid late-night snacks and drinking. Sleep patterns can easily be interrupted when food and alcohol are consumed too close to bed time. Your body’s normal function at night is recovery. When you introduce food or alcohol, you are interrupting the normal body functions, and creating a situation where your body is distracted from normal functions as it processes these substances.

If you use sleep music to produce a calming environment, you will be less likely to suffer from insomnia. There are many different styles available ranging from music to sleep sounds that can help induce sleep.
